Woman raped in Mumbai’s Sakinaka succumbs

Mumbai: The 34-year-old woman, who was raped and brutally assaulted in Mumabai’s Sakinaka, has succumbed during her treatment at he civic-run Rajawadi hospital in Ghatkopar this morning, said Mumbai police.

This shocking incident that has taken place in Mumbai has reminded of the 2012 ‘Nirbhaya’ case. The deceased 34-year-old woman was allegedly raped and brutally assaulted in suburban Sakinaka, police said on Friday. One of the accused has been identified as Mohan Chouhan (45). He was arrested within a few hours of the incident, said an official.

Reportedly, the brutal incident took place inside a stationary tempo and it has been alleged that the woman sustained serious injuries as an iron rod was inserted in her private parts.

According to Maheshwar Reddy, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), received a call at 3 am about an injured couple on Khiarani Road in Sakinaka, Andheri east. After reaching the spot, police found the woman lying injured inside a parked tempo and an injured man who was outside the vehicle on the road. They were immediately rushed to the civic-run Rajawadi hospital in Ghatkopar where doctors confirmed sexual assault. Police also said that the medical examination confirmed that the woman was also brutalized.

Thereafter, a case of assault and rape was registered on the basis of the opinion given by doctors since the woman was unconscious. The cops scanned the CCTV recordings of the spot and arrested Mohan who was seen at the crime scene.

The accused has been booked under sections 307, 376, 323, and 504 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Meanwhile, National Commission for Women chairperson Rekha Sharma and Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has taken serious notice of the incident.

Till the last reports came in, Court sent the accused to police custody till September 21.

It is to be noted that this incident reminded of the horrifying Nirbhaya rape case, where in December 2012, a young woman, later referred to as `Nirbhaya’, was brutally gang- raped and assaulted inside a moving bus in Delhi. Later, she died in hospital after struggling for life for several days. This caused a wave of outrage across the country.
