Uttarakhand UCC Bill: Governor Gurmit Singh sends bill to President Droupadi Murmu for final approval

Uttarakhand: In the latest news, the Uttarakhand UCC (Uniform Civil Code) has been sent to the President’s office for approval. With this, the UCC bill has moved one step closer to becoming the law.

According to reports, the UCC will be implemented onto the Uttarakhand law once it is approved by President Droupadi Murmu. The bill was first sent to Uttarakhand Governor Gurmit Singh who then sent it to President Droupadi Murmu for her approval.

Earlier on February 7, The Uttarakhand Assembly had passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by a voice vote, the first such move by any state after Independence that could be replicated by similar legislations in other BJP-ruled states.

After the Bill was passed, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said, “The UCC will give the right to equality to everyone without any discrimination on matters like marriage, maintenance, inheritance, divorce etc. There will be no discrimination against women now. This will eradicate the injustice against them.”

It is noteworthy mentioning that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill proposes uniform marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance laws for all citizens irrespective of their religion in Uttarakhand.

With the bill, the Uttarakhand government has decided to get all live-in relationships registered in the state, irrespective of whether they are the residents of Uttarakhand or not, will have to submit a statement of their live-in relationship under sub-section (1) of section 381.
