Uttarakhand Assembly to take up final draft of Uniform Civil Code Bill today

The Uttarakhand Assembly is set to take up the final draft of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) today, days after it was approved by the state cabinet.

Dehradun: The Uttarakhand Assembly is set to take up the final draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill today. The update has come days after it was approved by the state cabinet.

Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a common set of laws that are applicable to all the citizens of India. The law is not based on religion in dealing with marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, among other personal matters.

If the bill is passed and UCC gets implemented, Uttarakhand will become the first state in the country after Independence to adopt the Uniform Civil Code.

According to official reports, in the draft bill that Uttarakhand will present in the assembly, the government seeks a complete ban on polygamy. At the same time, there is also a provision for live-in couples to register their relationship.

Reportedly, if the bill gets cleared, it will instate equal inheritance rights for both the son and daughter.

It is worth mentioning here that the draft for this bill was prepared earlier this year by a committee set up by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. A Uniform Civil Code (UGC) for the state was a major election promise by CM Pushkar Singh Dhami in the 2022 assembly polls.
