Sabarimala temple shuts for ‘Purification’ after two women below 50 enter shrine

Thiruvananthapuram: Sabarimala Temple was shut on Wednesday for purification rituals after two women entered and offered prayers at Lord Ayyappa’s Shrine at 3.45 AM.

Devotees named Bindu and Kanakdurga, both under the age of 50 years, were escorted by cops in the temple,  the first to do so since the Supreme Court ordered the end of a decades-old ban on women of menstrual age entering the shrine.

A video, posted by ANI, shows the women hurrying into the shrine, dressed in all-black and escorted by the police.

Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has issued standing orders to police to provide all possible protection to any woman who wants to enter the temple.

On September 28, the Supreme Court ruled in favour of allowing menstrual age women to the temple, against its age-old rituals, triggering protests in the state largely under the aegis of the BJP.
