Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his monthly radio address ‘Mann Ki Baat,’ paid a heartfelt tribute to the victims of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. On this day, he reflected on India’s resilience in the face of the “most heinous terror attack” the country has ever witnessed.

“We can never forget this day when India faced its most heinous terror attack,” expressed PM Modi during his address.

Fifteen years back, on November 26, 2008, ten heavily armed Pakistani terrorists unleashed a wave of coordinated attacks in Mumbai. Striking various locations, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, the Oberoi Trident Hotel, and the Nariman House Jewish community center, the assailants targeted both civilians and security personnel.

Armed with AK-47 assault rifles and grenades, the terrorists, who infiltrated the city via the Arabian Sea, caused widespread devastation. The horrifying events resulted in the loss of 166 lives, including 18 security personnel, and left hundreds injured. The financial toll, with property damage estimated to be worth crores, was staggering.

The attacks claimed the lives of key figures such as Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare, Army Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Mumbai’s additional police commissioner Ashok Kamte, and senior police inspector Vijay Salaskar.

During the attacks, security forces neutralized nine out of the ten terrorists, while the lone survivor, Ajmal Kasab, was arrested. Four years later, on November 21, 2012, Kasab was executed.
