Kerala doctor commits suicide after wedding called off over dowry demand

Thiruvananthapuram: A 26-year-old PG student in the surgery department of the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College was found dead at her rented apartment.

Shahana committed suicide after her boyfriend allegedly called off their wedding because her family failed to meet dowry demands on December 5.

After her death, Shahana’s relatives claimed that she took the extreme step because her boyfriend called off their wedding as her family was unable to fulfill the excessive dowry demands of the groom’s family. The groom’s family demanded 150 sovereigns of gold, 15 acres of land and a BMW car as dowry.

Based on their statements, Dr Ruwise, who is also a postgraduate doctor in the College, was taken into custody from Karunagappally early today, police said.

The police informed that they have registered a case of natural death. Sections of abetment to suicide and Dowry Prohibition Act were added based on the statements of Dr Shahana’s family.

Furthermore, Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Wednesday ordered the Women and Child Development department to conduct a probe into the matter, and submitted a report.
