Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghosh takes oath as India’s first Lokpal

New Delhi: Retired Supreme Court Judge Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghosh on Saturday took oath as the first Lokpal of India. President Ramnath Kovind administered the oath at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.

The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, commonly known as The Lokpal Act, is an anti-corruption Act of Indian Parliament in India which “seeks to provide for the establishment of the institution of Lokpal to inquire into allegations of corruption against certain public functionaries including Prime Minister,ministers,MP,Group A officials of the Central Government and for matters connecting them.”

On Tuesday it was decided that Justice Ghosh would be appointed in a historical decision, more than five years after the Parliament passed the Lokpal Bill.

In a communiqué issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, former SSB chief Archana Ramasundaram and former Maharashtra Chief Secretary Dinesh Kumar Jain, Mahender Singh and Dr Intrajeet Prasad Gautam were named as non-judicial members of Lokpal.

Likewise, Justice Dilip B. Bhosale, Justice Pradip Kumar Mohanty, Justice Abhilasha Kumari, Justice Ajay Kumar Tripathi have been appointed as the judicial members of the Lokpal.
