IPC issues drug safety alert for painkiller Meftal, warns of allergic reactions

The alert urges healthcare professionals and patients to closely monitor for any adverse effects associated with Meftal use.

New Delhi: The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), the official body responsible for setting drug standards in India, has issued a drug safety alert about the popular painkiller Meftal.

It has been claimed that the said medication, a commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), contains mefenamic acid, a component linked to severe allergic reactions, including the potentially life-threatening DRESS syndrome.

The alert, issued on November 30th, urges healthcare professionals and patients to closely monitor for any adverse effects associated with Meftal use. The DRESS syndrome, also known as Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms, reportedly is a rare but serious condition that can affect various internal organs.
