Indian students flock to US universities after pandemic, hits new record

Overall, the number of international students in the U.S. grew by 12% in the 2022-23 academic year, the largest single-year increase in more than 40 years

New-Delhi: The head count of international students at U.S. colleges and universities has fueled up after a pandemic slump.

Overall, the number of international students in the U.S. grew by 12% in the 2022-23 academic year, the largest single-year increase in more than 40 years, according to findings from the State Department and the nonprofit Institute of International Education. More than 1 million students came from abroad, the most since the 2019-20 school year.

According to the Open Doors report from the State Department and the Institute of International Education,the total number of students from India has reached 268,923, up 35 percent.

“Over 1 million international students studying in the U.S. reflects a strong rebound, with the number approaching pre-pandemic levels,” Allan Goodman, the IIE’s chief executive officer,  said in a statement.

India becomes the second-largest sender of students to the United States with 268,923 students over the past academic year, an all-time high and an increase of 35% from the prior year, whereas  China remains the top country, sending 289,526 students to the U.S., down 0.2% from the previous year.

Other countries like Bangladesh, Colombia, Ghana, Italy, Nepal, Pakistan and Spain have also sent their students to US.
