India Records Highest Daily Spike In COVID-19 Numbers With 1,15,736 New Cases

New-Delhi: India reported the highest daily spike in Covid cases on Wednesday with 1,15,736 new cases taking the tally to 1,28,01,785. It is the highest number of daily cases ever since the pandemic began.

India also witnessed a grim record of second-most fatalities due to Covid-19 in 2021, which stood at 631. The death toll from the deadly infection stands at 1,66,177.

While 59,856 people were discharged, the total active cases in the country stands at 8,43,473. Around 1,17,92,135 people have recovered so far from the deadly virus. Total vaccination stands at 8,70,77,474.

Maharashtra reported over 55,000 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, while Delhi witnessed 5,100 fresh cases of the deadly infection.

The five most affected stated by the total cases are Maharashtra( 31,13,354), Kerala (11,37,590), Karnataka (10,20,434), Andhra Pradesh (9,09,002) and Tamil Nadu (9,03,479).

Earlier, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that a total of 25,14,39,598 samples have been tested for COVID-19, up to April 6. Of these, 12,08,329 samples were tested on Wednesday.

In the meantime, India has vaccinated 33,37,601 in the last 24 hours, while 8,70,77,474 doses of the corona jabs have been administered in the country since the drive began on January 16 after the approval for the Covishield and Covaxin.

On April 1, the third phase of the vaccination drive began under which anyone 45 years or older is allowed to get a jab.

Amid the continued surge in Covid-19 cases in India again in the past few weeks, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday that vaccination is being carried out on the basis of priority.

It added that the aim of the drive is to vaccinate the ones who need it most, rather than the ones who want to get inoculated.
