ECI asks parties to not politicise defence forces in fresh advisory

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday issued a fresh advisory to all national and regional parties of India to not politicise the defence forces or its personnel and use them for personal gain for upcoming elections. This order comes days after the ECI had already asked the parties.

The Election Commission is trying to ensure that such instructions are effectively implemented and adhered to by the parties. Ensuring compliance of such advisories is a challenge because instances of violation often involve broad-based cases of political rhetoric and messaging.

References to Balakot air strike, the dog fight that ensued alongwith capture and return of Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman have been known to be used by party leaders in their speeches, posters and hoardings.

Social activists and masses alike had raised questions regarding the politicisation of the forces. The ECI had issued an advisory on March 9 and this order is a reiteration.
