Cyclone Michaung landfall process has started near Bapatla on Andhra Pradesh coast with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 km per hour

Andhra Pradesh: Cyclone Michaung landfall process has started near Bapatla on Andhra Pradesh coast with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 km per hour, gusting to 110 km per hour and will last for the next three hours.

As of 11 pm on Monday, the “Severe Cyclone Michaung” lies 130 km North of Chennai, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The cyclone is likely to move parallel to the South Andhra coast and cross between Nellore and Machilipatnam on the forenoon of December 5 as a severe cyclonic storm.

Over 9,000 people evacuated as Andhra braced for the landfall.

The Andhra Pradesh government has issued an alert for eight districts,  Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema and Kakinada.

Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has directed the officials to treat the storm as a major challenge to avoid loss of life and property as the winds are expected to blow gales reaching speeds of up to 110 kilometres per hour.

Rain has stopped in Chennai, but most parts of the city remains submerged, with heavy inundation in low-lying areas.
