Covid-19 Sub-variant JN.1 detected in 79 year old woman from Kerala
The Centre has confirmed a positive case of Covid sub-variant JN.1 in Kerala. The confirmation was given on Saturday.
New Delhi/ Kerala: In latest news, the Centre has confirmed a positive case of Covid sub-variant JN.1 in Kerala. The confirmation was given on Saturday after the case was identified in a positive RT-PCR Test result in Thiruvananthapuram on December 8.
Earlier, the sample had tested positive for Covid-19 on November 18. The infected has been identified as a 79 year old woman. Ahead of getting tested, the woman showed mild symptoms of Influenza like Illness.
The JN.1 variant is closely related to the BA.2.86 variant. The BA.2.86 variant also goes by the name of ‘Pirola.’ Number of ‘Pirola’ infected cases have lately been on rise in countries like US and China.
A press release from the Government states that the Health Ministry and State Health authorities are in constant touch with each other for the proper assessment of the situation. The press release further stated that the number of Covid cases has been on a rise in Kerala since the past few weeks. The release also assured that a majority of these reported cases are clinically mild and people are recovering at homes without any medical treatment.
A mock drill at all the health facilities across different states is currently underway to ensure the health of public and the preparedness of hospitals. This comes as a part of a regular exercise by the Union Health Ministry.
The India SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) is a chain of Genomic Laboratories which has been active in assessing the genomic aspects of the spread of Covid-19 infection in India.
Further, on December 15, India reported 312 fresh cases of Covid-19. 280 of the recorded cases were from Kerala. The Covid sub variant JN.1 was first detected in the US back in September 2023.
