Congress leader Navjot Sidhu to be released today

Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu is set to walk out of Patiala jail today after serving 10 months of a sentence in a road-rage incident.

Chandigarh: Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu is set to walk out of Patiala jail today after serving 10 months of a sentence in a road-rage incident.

The former Punjab Congress chief surrendered in front of a Patiala court on May 20, last year, after receiving a one-year rigorous sentence from the Supreme Court.

The top court said in its order that any sympathy in imposing an inadequate sentence would do more harm to the justice system and undermine public confidence in the efficacy of the law.

A 65-year-old man named Gurnam Singh died in the incident.

Counsel HPS Varma said, as per the Punjab prison rules, a convict with good behaviour is entitled to general remission.

“He is most likely to be released on Saturday from the Patiala jail,” said Varma.
