CBI arrests NHAI DGM, Railways Deputy Chief Engineer in bribery case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested five persons including an NHAI official in connection with a bribery case.

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested five individuals, including a Deputy Chief Engineer of West Central Railway and a Deputy General Manager and Project Director of the National Highway Authority of India, in a bribery case.

The CBI had registered a case against these accused in connection with an alleged demand for illegal gratification from a private contractor for settling the pending matters related to approval of the design for beginning construction work and the passing of due bills.

In a statement, the agency said that searches were conducted at 13 places in Bhopal, Jabalpur, Katni, Chindwara, Indore, and Rewa at the premises of the accused, which led to the recovery of incriminating documents, including property documents.

The official said that Rs 5.35 lakh in cash and 149 grammes of gold jewellery were recovered from the residence of Deputy CE, WCR, and 600 grammes of gold ornaments and 200 grammes of silver ornaments were also recovered from the premises of DGM, NHAI.

An official said that a trap was laid in which the Technician of the divisional office, WCR Bhopal, and the employee (GM) of a private company based in Jabalpur were caught while exchanging the alleged bribe.

All the arrested accused were produced today before the Special Judge for CBI Cases at Bhopal and were remanded to Police custody till the 28th of July.
