Seven students of Kashmir University have been booked for allegedly raising anti-India slogans after ICC World Cup final match.

Kashmir: The Ganderbal police in Jammu and Kashmir have invoked UAPA charges against seven students of Kashmir University for allegedly raising anti-India slogans after ICC World Cup final match.

The legal proceedings surrounding the anti-India sloganeering and intimidation that occurred in a university after the conclusion of the World Cup cricket match has raised numerous opinions and comments. Two significant aspects have been brought to public knowledge.

Firstly, it is not just about raising pro-Pakistan slogans; it is about the context in which the sloganeering took place. The slogans, as with select few bullies, were used to intimidate and vilify those who kept a distance or disagreed. It aims to normalize the belief that everyone hates India, practiced mostly on the back of separatist and terrorist networks. It is about terrorizing others who may be nourishing anti-Pakistan or pro-India feelings. Written complaints have been made, providing evidence of wrongdoing.

The second aspect concerns the application of the right law. Section 13 of the UAPA is about inciting, advocating, and encouraging separatist ideology. It classifies such actions as unlawful. It is not about planning, aiding, or executing actual terror acts but, in contrast to other provisions of the act, is a softer provision.

Hence, as per the content of the complaints, FIR No. 317/2023 stands registered and section 13 UAPA invoked for inciting and abetting unlawful activities. Section 505 and 506 IPC has also been invoked for ‘public mischief’ and ‘criminal intimidation’, respectively.

It is essential to mention that the FIR was lodged based on a written complaint received, and sections invoked as per the contents of the complaint.

Further investigation is underway.
