Goddess Skandamata gets worshipped on 5th day of Navratri

Goddess Skandamata gets worshipped on the 5th day of Navratri. The fifth incarnation of the Goddess is Skandamata. Her name literally means mother of Skanda. Lord Skanda or better known as Kartika, took war training from his mother Goddess Skandamata, and defeated and killed demon Tarakasura.

Lord Skanda is the son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. He is better known as Lord Kartika. It is said demon Tarakasure tortured innocent people in the world. His oppression gradually crossed all limits for which his death became a dire necessary. However, his death was in the hand of ‘son of Lord shiva’. After knowing this mother Goddess Parvati trained him for war when she adorned the avatar of Skandamata.

Today is the fifth day of Navarathri. On this occasion Goddess Skandamata gets worshipped. The fifth incarnation of Devi Durga is Skandamata. In this avatar kid Lord skanda is seen on the lap of mother Skandamata. Goddess Skandamata is also called Bidyabasini. In the mythological books, Lord Skanda has been described as Lord Kartika or Lord Kartikeya.

As per a legend, once Lord Indra mocked at Lord Kartika and said that He is not the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Hence, Lord Kartikeya became sad. Seeing this Mata Paravati put Lord Kartika on her lap while she was riding a lion.

Today, the fine time to worship Goddess Skandamata is from 11am to 12.29 pm and 2.00 to 2.45 pm. In the evening the good time to worship is 5.48 to 6.13 pm.

Rise early in the morning on this day and take a holy dip after completing your daily chores. Then, begin the worship. Purify the idol of Goddess with Gangajal. Offer sweet and five types of fruits to her. Keep a few coins in a water filled pot (kalasa). Then, take the vow (sankalpa). Worship Goddess Skandamata with sandal paste, vermillion and flowers. Then, do arati of the Goddess. And chant the mantra of Goddess Skandamata.

Hymn to pray Goddess Skandamata:

Ya Devi Sarbabhuteshu Maa Skandamata Rupera Sansthita.

Namastasiyei Namastasiyei Namastasiyei Namo Namah.

Offer banana to Goddess Skandamata on Panchami. And accept this as offering.
