Chaitra Navratri 2024: Date and lessons behind 9 Avatars of Goddess Durga

Chaitra Navratri 2024 will commence from April 9 (Tuesday) and end on April 17 (Wednesday). On these nine days, 9 different menifestations of Goddess Durga are worshipped.

This year, the Pratipada tithi is falling on Tuesday, April 9. From this day, the worship of the mother Goddess will begin to continue for nine days till April 17.

Chaitra Navratri 2024 will be celebrated for nine days while each day of these 9 days is dedicated to nine different incarnations of Goddess Durga.

It is believed that during these nine days, Mother Durga descends from the heaven to earth to be with her devotees. Hence this 9 day period is regarded as an auspicious time.

The 9 manifestations of Durga Maa teach nine kinds of things. Let’s discuss which Goddess provides us with what on these nine days:

Prathami, the first day: Maa Shailaputri is worshipped on this day. Devotees should learn to have patience and tolerance on this day from the deity.

Dwitiya, the second day: Maa Brahmacharini is worshipped on this day. We should learn austerity and temperance from this deity.

Trutiya, the third day: Maa Chandraghanta is worshipped on the third day of Chaitra Navratri. We should learn devotion and service from this Goddess.

Chaturthi, the fourth day of Navratri: Maa Kushmanda is worshipped on the fourth day Navratri. Mother Kushmanda is a symbol of courage and passion.

Panchami, the fifth day of Navratri: Maa Skandamata is worshipped on this day. Mother Skandamata teaches us motherhood and child care.

Sasthi, the sixth day of Navratri: Maa Katyayani is worshipped on this day. She is called the avatar of Dharma.

Saptami, the seventh day: Mother Kalaratri is worshipped on this day. Goddess Kalaratri is known as the destroyer. She teaches that we must give up unnecessary and harmful things.

Astami, the eighth day: Maa Mahagouri is worshipped on this day. The Goddess explains the need for sanctity and purity.

Navami, the ninth day: Mother Siddhidatri is worshipped on this day. We can learn the importance of self-surrender and sadhana (disciplined and dedicated learning) from Goddess Siddhidatri.
