The currency notes of denomination Rs 2000 can be exchanged at any branch of any bank starting from May 23, 2023. As per the RBI statement, the last date for exchange is 30 September 2023.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday said that it will withdraw the Rs 2,000 denomination banknote from circulation but it will continue as legal tender. In a statement, the RBI said, “All banks shall provide deposit and/or exchange facility for 2,000 banknotes until September 30, 2023.” Hence, it is now required to exchange the Rs 2000 notes. It can be done in a bank.

Here is the process to exchange Rs 2000 notes in a bank:

Visit any branch of any bank.

While it is good to approach your home branch of the bank, where you have an account, it is not essential. You can exchange your notes in any bank or branch.

If you have an account, furnish your account details to streamline the exchange process.

Fill the request slip that is available with the bank. Fill up the ‘Tenderer’ name in the space provide. Also fill up the UID, the Unique Identification Number. You need to present an identity proof. The original of this proof is required for verification. Any of these documents can be provided as ID proof – Aadhaar Card, Driving License, Voter ID Card, Passport, NREGA Card.

Now fill up the details of the Rs 2000 notes that you want to exchange. It includes ‘Denomination’ (write Rs 2000), no of pieces and value (the total amount of all the Rs 2000 notes that you want to exchange. The maximum limit is Rs 20, 000 at a time).

Now sign the form. You are also required to write the place, date etc.

Submit the form now along with the Rs 2000 notes.

The RBI also said that the last date for the process shall be 30 September 2023

As per RBI you can exchange the Rs 2000 notes without paying any fees. The service is free of cost.

Earlier, in a statement, the RBI said: “The 2,000 denomination banknote was introduced in November 2016 primarily to meet the currency requirements of the economy in an expeditious manner after the withdrawal of legal tender status of all 500 and 1,000 banknotes in circulation at that time.
