Odisha: Except Puri, 99% banks functional in Cyclone Fani affected areas

Bhubaneswar: Except Puri district, 99% branches of various banks have become functional in the Cyclone Fani affected areas in Odisha, informed Union Finance Additional Secretary Debasish Panda here on Thursday.

“Today’s situation is that 99% of the bank branches, except in Puri, are functioning in the cyclone-hit areas,” Panda said after a joint review meeting held here by him and Odisha’s Finance Secretary Ashok Meena with senior officials of RBI, State Government, SLBC, Bankers, Insurance Companies and Telcom Companies over the restoration of Banking Services in the State in the aftermath of cyclone Fani.

“So far ATM is concerned, there is problem in Puri, Khurda and Cuttack due to poor connectivity as the VSATs got blown away,”  he added saying almost 90% ATMs will become functional in these districts by end of this week.

In the meeting, Insurance companies have been instructed to reach out to the insured people and help them to get their claims. Adoption of Kerala model in Odisha was also recommended to settle down loan related issues.

On May 3, the extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani made landfall near Puri coast, causing huge damage to infrastructure and livelihood in 14 coastal districts in the state.
