Ailing female jumbo dies under treatment in Keonjhar

Keonjhar: The ailing female elephant which had been rescued from Uparsumath village under Bhuyan-Juanga-Pidha forest range here on September 27, succumbed under treatment today.

Informing on the development, a Forest Department source informed that the carcass of the jumbo will be buried post autopsy inside the Bhuyan-Juanga-Pidha forest.

While the cause of the death of the elephant is yet to be ascertained it is worth mentioning here that, after her rescue, a Herpes virus infection was being suspected. Blood samples of the pachyderm had also been collected and sent for examination to confirm the same at a later stage.

A joint team of veterinary experts from the Wildlife Trust of India and Similipal National Park was treating the elephant when her condition deteriorated since last night.
