Sri Lanka: Cricketer-turned-politician Arjuna Ranatunga arrested

Colombo: Former Sri Lankan Petroleum Minister and cricket legend Arjuna Ranatunga was on Monday arrested over a shooting incident that killed one person amidst political crisis in the country .

“Colombo Crime division arrested Ranatunga over the shooting incident and he will be produced to the court shortly,” police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said.

On Sunday, one person died and two were injured when a mob attempted to surround Ranatunga and his security personnel opened fire.

The incident took place when the supporters of President Maithripala Sirisena tried to take the cricketer-turned-politician hostage while he was trying to enter his office at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.

Sri Lanka has been facing a constitutional crisis after Sirisena on Saturday dissolved the cabinet with the appointment of a new prime minister a day earlier.
