A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.3 struck the Northwestern Afghanistan during the morning hours on Sunday.

Kabul: A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.3 struck the Northwestern Afghanistan on Sunday morning. As per the US Geological Survey, the quake hit the northwest of the Afghan city of Herat.

As per reliable reports, the epicentre of the latest tremor was about 30 km north-west of Herat. It is Afghanistan’s third-largest city close to the Iranian border. No casualties in the earthquake have been reported yet.

The Afghanistan earthquake hit at 0336 GMT. Around 1,000 people in the Western Herat province have been killed by a series of strong earthquakes over the past several days. This is the third earthquake in Afghanistan in the last 10 days.

Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes — especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range as it lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. In June last year, Paktika province was hit by a 5.9 magnitude quake which killed more than 1,000 people and left thousands homeless.
