A powerful earthquake of 6.1 magnitude struck the north-western Afghanistan during the morning hours of Wednesday.

Kabul: A powerful earthquake of 6.1 magnitude struck the north-western Afghanistan during the morning hours of Wednesday.

As per reports from the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the tremors of the quake were felt at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.21 miles).

No immediate updates of loss of lives or damage to property were reported.

This comes days after multiple earthquakes struck the country’s north western city of Herat on Saturday. The multiple earthquakes in Afghanistan killed over 2,000 people and destroyed thousands of homes.

Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes — especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range as it lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.

In June last year, Paktika province was hit by a 5.9 magnitude quake which killed more than 1,000 people and left thousands homeless.
