Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis approves blessings for same-sex couples
The sovereign of the Vatican City, Pope Francis has approved that priests can administer blessings to same-sex couples in a landmark ruling.
Vatican City: The head of the Catholic Church, the bishop of Rome and sovereign of the Vatican City, Pope Francis has approved that priests can administer blessings to same-sex couples in a landmark ruling.
The bishop said that the Roman Catholic priests can administer blessings to the couples as long as they are not part of regular Church rituals or liturgies.
A document from the Vatican’s doctrinal office revealed that such blessing would not legitimise irregular situations but be a sign that God welcomes all.
The document said priests should decide on a case-by-case basis. They should not prevent or prohibit the Church’s closeness to people in every situation in which they might seek God’s help through a simple blessing.
