At least 53 killed in tribal violence in Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea: In a tragic incident, at least 53 people have been killed in an ongoing tribal violence in northern highlands of Papua New Guinea. This comes after long standing rifts between tribal groups in the region, said reports in this regard.

Reports from reliable sources state that the people were killed during an ambush in the Wapenamanda district in the Enga Province of the Oceania country. Reportedly, the tribal violence in Papua took place between two groups on Sunday. It is being believed that the clash took place between Sikin and Kaekin tribal groups.

On Monday morning the local police confirmed that 53 dead bodies of men were recovered from the site. The police even said that the deceased were likely killed near the Wabag town, which lied 600 kilometers northwest of the capital Port Moresby.

While the exact circumstances of their death have not yet been ascertained, the police said that they had been reported about massive firing in the area.

Moreover, the clashes were marked by the usage of high powered firearms like AK47 and M4 rifles.

The consequences of the tribal violence in Papua New Guinea has left numerous communities disturbed and devastated.

Back in the year 2023, yet another violent tribal clash between the same groups had resulted in the deaths of over 60 people. The death toll in yesterday’s clash is likely to increase as well.

On the other hand, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed deep concern over these developments. He has also acknowledged the gravity of the situation. In a radio interview on Monday, Albanese said, “That is very disturbing news that has come out of Papua New Guinea.”
