7.5 magnitude earthquake shakes Philippines, Tsunami alert issued

An earthquake of 7.5 magnitude on Richter scale shook Mindanao of Philippines on Saturday following which a tsunami alert has been issued.

Philippine: An earthquake of 7.5 magnitude on Richter scale shook Mindanao of Philippines on Saturday. The tremor was at a depth of 63 km, informed European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

Following the quake, Phivolcs (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) has warned of destructive tsunamis with life threatening wave heights of more than one meter above normal tides following the magnitude 6.9 quake that struck the waters off Hinatuan in Surigao Del Sur.

Earlier, an earthquake of 6.8 magnitude hit the country resulting in death of over eight people while many were left injured. The quake affected over 1,500 people. Around 50 houses and over 70 structures were damaged, including school buildings, government facilities, bridges, roads and private establishments. Some of the damaged roads are still not passable.
