Instagram’s Thread app might prove a potential rival to Twitter, know why

The new Threads app by Instagram is a direct challenge to the microblogging platform, Twitter's, giant userbase.

Instagram has officially introduced the ‘Threads’ app, which is a direct competition to Twitter.

The new Instagram Threads app offers users the ability to engage in conversations and share texts and links by replying to or reposting messages from fellow users. Posting on the Threads app itself, the Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, said that there should be a public conversation app with over one billion users on it. He further said, “Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn’t nailed it. Hopefully we will”

Meta owned platforms, Facebook and Instagram have much of a reputation in taking ideas from emerging competitors on the internet. Be it the Reels feature from TikTok or the disappearing feature from Snapchat, it is noteworthy that all have proven to be very successful.

Meta has previously competed with Twitter via indirect means, but this is the first time that the competition is totally explicit. The new Instagram threads app’s direct target is the microblogging site, Twitter’s functionality and userbase.

What makes Threads more interesting is that verified Instagram accounts can continue with their blue badges on the newly launched app as well. On the contrary, the verification badge on Twitter is a paid-only feature. Instagram Threads, for now, is launching as a paid-only feature.

Twitter currently has a limitation on the number of tweets an user can view. considering this as a limitation, a significant part of the userbase of Twitter is likely to get excited at the possibility of having an alternative. Twitter has had direct competitors earlier, namely Bluesky and Mastodon. However, they have never been able to build up networks huge enough to give posts, the impact Twitter does.
