Ever wondered why your mobile number starts with digits like 9, 8, 7, 6; Know the reason behind it

The advent of mobile phones has revolutionized the technological world. Communicating with your loved ones used to be a difficult task in the past and people used to rely on landline phones. Bad weather conditions proved to be a disruption in the connectivity of landlines.

However, almost two decades later, we can reach anyone across the world within a few seconds. The improvement in connectivity has been possible due to mobile phones which are powered by SIM cards. Activating a SIM card gives you a mobile number and it can be used by a person who tries to contact you. A mobile number consists of 10 digits. If you are from India, at some point you must have thought about the initial digits of your mobile number. The initial digits of your mobile number start with +91 (which is the country code of India) and are followed by digits like 9, 8, 7, or 6. You might have wondered why the initial digits did not start with 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5.

Here are some reasons why the mobile number in India is fixed to certain digits only

The telephone numbers with digits starting from 1 are usually associated with government services. The government services include police, fire services, ambulance, etc. Due to this reason, personal numbers in India can not start with 1.

If you want to avail of any government services you have to dial a number starting with 1 (try to mark this next time when you call these services).

On the other hand, there are numbers starting with 2, 3, 4, and 5. It is worth mentioning that the numbers starting from 2, 3, 4, and 5 are used by landline phones. This is the reason why mobile numbers with these digits can not be used as mobile numbers.

The number 0 is used as an STD code for landline numbers. Hence, it can not be used for mobile numbers in India.
