Keonjhar: A woman committed suicide by setting herself afire following a family feud in Laxmipur village under Harichandanpur police limits in the district last night. Two houses were also gutted in the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Jhunu Mohapatra, wife of Litu Mohapatra of Harichandanpur village.
The couple’s four-year-old son and the lone eyewitness to the incident said a verbal duel erupted between his parents on certain issues in the night. As the argument escalated further, Jhunu doused herself in kerosene and set herself ablaze in a fit of rage. Jhunu’s attempt caused a massive blaze as the flames caught up at least two rooms at her house, in which she was charred to death.
While the incident took place at around 8.30 PM the neighbours of the couple called up local fire brigade which brought the flames under control reaching the spot. However, till then assets worth lakhs had been gutted in the fire.
On the other hand, the mother of the deceased told a different story in connection to the incident. She has alleged that her daughter had a disturbed married life and her husband used to mete out inhumane torture to her.
Police are trying to trace the husband of the deceased who is absconding after the incident.
