Video journalist of local TV channel attacked by miscreants in Rourkela

Rourkela: In an incident of attack on media, a video journalist was attacked by a group of miscreants in front of WESCO office in Madhusudanpalli area under Plant Site police limits here on Saturday.

As per a complaint filed by the victim journalist identified as Rupesh Malakar of Mahak TV, over a hundred residents of Indira Nagar slum held a demonstration before WESCO office in the morning protesting the disconnection of power supply to at least 150 households in the area. The strikers alleged that while the residents paid their electricity bills every month without any delay, a staff of the department swindled away the money causing a due amount of Rs 15,000 on which the action was taken. However, things suddenly went wrong and a group 10-15 suspected hired goons of the electricity department present at the spot started misbehaving with Malakar while he was taking visuals of the incident. They thrashed him brutally and left injured.

“The attackers threatened to kill me and tried to attack me with an iron rod snatched away from a cycle store located nearby. They warned me of dire consequences in case my news channel aired the news,” mentioned Malakar in his complaint.

While police have started investigation into the case, journalist fraternity in the city have demanded stringent action against the culprits.
