Baripada: In a crackdown on corrupt officials in Mayurbhanj district, Vigilance sleuths today conducted a raid at Kaptipada Tehsildar Sarat Chandra Mallick’s office and arrested him while accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a person.
The raid was conducted after a sand trader Hemant Kumar Behera of Kaptipada area lodged a complaint against Mallick few days ago. The complainant accused the Tehsildar of demanding the bribe amount to allow him to lift sand from a river bed in the area.
Acting upon the complaint, the anti-corruption bureau officials set up a trap this morning and caught Mallick red-handed while taking bribe from Behera at his office.
Vigilance sources said the accused Tehsildar was involved in extending patronage to sand smugglers in the area flouting the National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines with vested interest.
