Same-Sex Marriage in Odisha: Couple threatens to commit suicide if separated

Kendrapara: The live-in lesbian partners, who have already signed an agreement in a court recently to live together, today threaten to commit suicide if they are separated.

Notably, on Saturday, Sabitri Parida of Mahakalapada and Monalisa Nayak of Srirampur expressed their willingness to stay together. However, Nayak’s parents approached the local police alleging that Parida has forced their daughter to marry her and live with her as her life partner.

Based on the complaint filed by Monalisa’s father police rescued the girls and recorded their statement. During interrogation, they are said to have expressed their willingness to live together as partners.

“Based on the allegation of Antarjena Nayak of Srirampur village we rescued the girls. During integration we learnt that the couple got married as per Supreme Court guidelines and threatened to commit suicide in case of attempts to separate them,” informed Pattamundai SDPO Ranjan Kumar Dey.

Speaking to the media, Sabitri said, “We were good friends. However, when her (Monalisa) parents decided to marry her off, she bitterly cried and expressed her wiliness to stay with me forever or else she would end her life. Therefore, I received her as my partner.”

“As I have accepted her as my partner, it is my responsibility to look after her and neither her parents nor anyone should be worried over it. If I neglect to do so then her parents can file police complaint against me. We will attempt to suicide if separated from one another and our family member will be responsible for our death,” threatened Sabitri.

Supporting her partner Monalisa said that the Supreme Court has decriminalized homosexuality, so we are legally allowed to live together. “I am not a minor and I am not forced by anyone to take the decision. I have taken the decision as per my willingness. We know ourselves better, therefore we decided to marry,” she said.
