Odisha Rasagola gets GI tag

Bhubaneswar: Putting an end to the long wait, the sweet delicacy of Odisha offered to Lord Jagannath ‘Rasagola’ got the Geographical Indication (GI) tag today.

The mouth-watering syrupy dessert has been registered under Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 2019 as ‘Odisha Rasagola’ falling in Class-30 in respect of Food Stuff.

Denizens went into a celebratory mood following the news of Rasagola getting the GI tag as a widespread discontentment has been caused in the state after neighbouring West Bengal bagged the GI tag for ‘Banglar Rasogolla’ in November 2017 after a fight with Odisha.

Last year, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) had been filed in Odisha High Court seeking Geographical Indication (GI) tag for ‘Odishara Rasagola’.

The GI tag of ‘Odisha Rasagola’ will remain valid till Feb 22, 2028.
