Berhampur : A dreaded criminal was injured during a police encounter near Pustapur village in Ganjam district on the wee hours of Wednesday.
The accused criminal has been identified as Dillip Das(24) alias Bidesi of Banapur area in Khordha district.
Based on a tip-off about presence of the criminal at a cashew forest near Pustapur, police tried to nab him. However, he opened fire at the cops in a bid to escape.
In retaliation by the police, he sustained bullet injuries on his right leg. The criminal was rushed to Khallikote hospital for treatment. He was later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here.
Police have seized gun, bullets, one mobile phone and one motorcycle from his possession.
More than 20 criminal cases are pending against Das, police said.
