Noted writer Padma Shri Binapani Mohanty dies

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s renowned writer Padma Shri Binapani Mohanty passed away this evening at her residence in Cuttack’s Badambadi.

Born in Berhampur on November 11 in 1936, Binapani Mohanty had passed the Matric exam in 1953 and graduated in Economy in 1957.

She started her teaching career as a lecturer in Economy in 1960. However, she retired from her services in 1992.

Pata Dei, Khela Ghara, Naiku Rasta, Bastraharana, Andhakarara, Kasturi Murga O Sabuja Aranya and Michhi Michhika are some of her best-known stories.

Binapani Mohanty was conferred with the Padma Shri in 2020 for her contribution to Odia literature. She also was awarded the Adibadi Jagannath Das Puraskar – the highest literary award by the Odisha Sahitya Akademi, in 2019.

Prior to these, she also had received the Sahitya Akademy award in 1990 and Sarala Puraskar in 2010.

Binapani Mohanty had founded an organisation of Odia women writers named ‘Odisha Lekhika Sansad.’
