Hirakud to release season’s first flood water on August 14

Sambalpur: To tackle the situation arising out of the increasing water level in the reservoir, the Hirakud dam authorities have decided to open its sluice gates starting from August 14.

The move aimed at releasing the first flood water of the season will be carried out at 11 am on the same day, informed Chief Engineer of the dam Sunil Nayak.

Notably, against a storage capacity of 630 ft the water level of the reservoir stands at 610.85 ft at 9.00 hrs today.

611.45 ft water is expected by today in the dam, an official source said.

In view of the release of the flood water from the reservoir people residing in the lower catchment areas of Mahanadi river have been told to stay alert and cautioned against venturing into the water. Similarly, admirations in the districts like Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Angul, Boudh, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Phulbani, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur and Puri have been alerted for the purpose.
