Custodial Death: Detainee found hanging in Rajgangpur Jail of Sundergarh

Sundergarh: Tension prevailed at the Rajgangpur Police Station last night after a detainee was found hanging inside its latrine and his family members alleged it to be a ‘custodial death’.

The deceased has been identified as Jai Lakra (30), a resident of Raikakchhar village near Kurumu area.

As per the report, Lakra, who runs a bank assistance centre in the village was picked up by Rajgangpur Police on December 1 for questioning, after a local charged him of defrauding cash from him. The complainant alleged that Lakra took away money from him on the pretext of depositing in the bank account but didn’t do so.

Lakra was found dead in the latrine of the police station at around 10.30 pm yesterday which sparked resentment among the locals in his village. They questioned the purpose of the detention of Lakra by police for almost four days which is illegal and claimed police excess on him.

“At least 17 platoons of police force have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order situation. Police is waiting for the autopsy report to decide its next course of action,” informed Western Range DIG Kavita Jalan.
