Brajarajnagar by-election results: BJP’s Radharani Panda loses deposit, Naveen Patnaik congratulates Alaka Mohanty for victory

Bhubaneswar: BJP candidate Radharani Panda lost her deposit in Brajarajnagar by-election, the results of which were announced today.

According to the State election commission, Radharani Panda got only 22560 votes in her favour which is only 14.74 per cent. She lost her deposit as per the Representation of People Act (RP Act), 1951, as she didn’t get 16% of valid votes polled in the assembly constituency.

On the other hand, BJD president and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated his party candidate Alaka Mohanty who won the bypoll.

“I congratulate to BJD candidate Alaka Mohanty for her massive victory in the Brajrajnagar bypoll. I express my gratitude to the people of Brajrajnagar for their unwavering love and thank all party workers for their sincere effort. This victory has further strengthened our resolve to serve the people,” Patnaik tweeted in Odia.

It is to be noted here that BJD’s Alaka Mohanty won the byelection by a huge margin. She got 93,790 votes while Kishore Patel of the Congress party bagged 27,565 votes and Radharani Panda received 22316 votes.

It is to be noted here that voting for the by-election was held on May 31. A total of 11 candidates were in the fray. The counting of votes was conducted amid tight security today.

The Brajarajnagar MLA seat was lying vacant following the sad demise of former MLA Kishore Mohanty. The former Speaker of Odisha Legislative Assembly and former MLA Mohanty died due to a heart attack in December 2021 at the age of 63.

Mohanty first became the MLA for the Jharsuguda Assembly constituency in 1990 from the Janata Dal. Later, he won from the same constituency twice in 2000 and 2009 with Biju Janata Dal (BJD) ticket.
