BJD announces to support Triple Talaq Bill in Rajya Sabha

Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has announced to support the Triple Talaq Bill tabled in the Upper House of the Parliament, Rajya Sabha today to be passed later.

Informing on his party’s decision the BJD’s Floor Leader in Rajya Sabha Prasanna Acharya had earlier said that BJD had supported the Bill in Lok Sabha and the stance will be the same in Rajya Sabha. Earlier during a discussion in the Lower House Lok Sabha filmstar turned politician Anubhav Mohanty had also advocated in favour of the bill.

Notably, Lok Sabha passed the Triple Talaq Bill by a voice vote on July 25 amidst walkout by several political parties including Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The Bill criminalises instant divorce of Muslim women by their husbands and makes provision for jail term for the offense.

Union Minister of Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad to table the Triple Talaq Bill known as “The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019” in Rajya Sabha at 12 pm, today.
