ASHA workerRayagada: Going beyond the call of duty and setting an example for others in her fraternity, an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker donated blood to a pregnant woman and saved the lives of both the mother and the child at the Rayagada district headquarters hospital on Saturday.

According to reports, the ASHA worker, identified as Sumitra Karkaria of Anuguda village under Kolnara block in the district, chose to be a life-saver while shifting a pregnant woman to the Rayagada district headquarters hospital last night. The expectant mother Urmila Khosla from Goudaguda village of the neghbouring Koraput district needed an immediate blood transfusion after she was detected with anaemia by the doctors after reaching the hospital with the help of Sumitra. While the patient was in need of A+ve group blood, the relatives of the patient as well as the hospital authorities failed to arrange blood of the required category. At that time, Sumitra put her hand up and turned a donor for the patient saving the lives of both the mother and the child.

Doctors attending on Urmila have stated that the mother and the child are out of danger now and hailed Sumitra for her selfless and humanitarian act.

On the other hand, the patient Urmila and her family members have expressed their deep gratitude to the ASHA worker saying her timely help saved two valuable lives.

Sumitra Karkaria’s commitment towards the blood donation cause has brought her widespread praise across the State.
