Berhampur: In yet another threat to the shrinking elephant population in the state, forest officials recovered carcass of a giant tusker near Digigan in Buguda forest area under South Ghumusar Forest Division in Ganjam district on Friday.

Some locals first spotted the pachyderm’s body while on a visit to the forest late in the night yesterday and called up forest officials. After reaching the spot and examining the officials and the veterinary team accompanying them claimed it to be a case of electrocution.

While the dead tusker would be around 50-year-old the carcass is at least two-day old, said the veterinary officials.

However, locals also suspect it to be a case of poaching as hunters are on the prowl in the forest located near the village.
