Padma Shri Prafulla Kar to be cremated with full state honours

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday announced that the noted Odia musician and Padma Shri Prafulla Kar will be cremated with full state honours today.

Reportedly at the direction of Chief Minister, Urban and Law Minister Pratap Jena and School and Mass Education Minister Sameer Dash will attend the funeral of Late Prafulla Kar at Puri Swargadwar.

Chief Minister has expressed deep grief over the death of renowned musician Prafulla Kar and extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved families. “I am saddened to learn of the death of the famous musician Prafulla Kar. His demise marked the end of an era in the world of Oriya music. His unique musical style will forever immortalize him in the hearts of the people. I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family and wish them well,” he wrote on his official Twitter account.

Adding to it, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed grief over Kar’s death and wrote “Anguished by the passing away of Shri Prafulla Kar Ji. He will be remembered for his pioneering contribution to Odia culture and music. He was blessed with a multifaceted personality and his creativity was reflected in his works. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

The body of eminent musician Prafulla Kar will be taken from his residence in Satyanagar to Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi (OSNA) at 11.30 am and then to Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya. His last rites will be conducted in Puri Swargadwar today.

He passed away late on Sunday night at the age of 83 due to a cardiac arrest. Kar was an Odia musician, singer, lyricist, writer and columnist. He received Padma Shri in 2015 for his contribution in the field of arts.

The maestro was very popular in every Odia household through his songs like ‘Kamala Desha Rajakumara’, ‘Kalia mo dehe boli de to deha kala’, ‘Mo priya tharu kie’.

A pall of gloom descended on the Ollywood fraternity as the afterlife of renowned musician Prafulla Kar is an irreparable loss for the Odia music industry.
