Kolkata: Former Jammu and Kashmir CM and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has said that a unified opposition front against BJP ahead of 2019 polls is not feasible without Congress. He further stated that no effort in unifying the opposition will succeed unless the Congress is a part of the front to take the fight to the BJP “in the way in which we hope”.

Abdullah especially emphasized on the fact that Congress holds the largest share of seats in the opposition and its inclusion in the unified federal front is utmost necessary to ensure BJP’s defeat in 2019. He went on to add that being the party president of Congress, Rahul Gandhi should be the face of the unified opposition.

The NC leader had earlier met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on friday to discuss the possibility of a ‘Mega Alliance’, comprising all the opposition parties ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The duo met at West Bengal State Secretariat ‘Nabanna’ where discussions between the two prominent leaders took place in a closed-door meeting.

After the meeting, Omar revealed that they are trying to form a true federal front which would bring together all parties that oppose the BJP. He stressed on the need to unite to face the saffron party in 2019 general elections. Abdullah also appealed to all the parties to set aside their differences and come together in their fight against BJP.

Speaking on the current political situations in Jammu and Kashmir, which is under Governor’s rule after the breakdown of the PDP-BJP alliance, Omar revealed that his party had demanded the assembly to be dissolved. He also added that talking of assembly elections in J&K at this juncture does not make any sense.
