Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government today fixed a target to bring 25 lakh farmers in the State under the Prime Minister Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) for the Kharif season, 2017. These farmers would have to pay only 2% of the premium to avail this facility; the rest would be born jointly by the Central and the State Governments.
After the decision by the State Government, an additional 8 lakh farmers would come under the insurance fold as compared to the last season if everything goes well.
In another important decision, the State Government decided to bring seven major crops under PMFBY purview: paddy, groundnut, cotton, turmeric, ginger, red-gram (Arhar) and maize. Red-gram (Arhar) and maize are the new entrants, which were missing from the list last season.
