Odisha: Hirakud Dam opens 4 more sluice gates; Flood water now being released from 14 gates

Due to continuous rain in the upper catchment area, four more gates of Hirakud Dam have been opened on Thursday.

Sambalpur: Due to continuous rain in the upper catchment area, four more gates of Hirakud Dam have been opened on Thursday. Earlier today, eight gates were opened to release the flood water.

Taking into account the rising water level at the reservoir due and due to heavy rain expected in the upper catchment area. The Hirakud dam authorities opened four more sluice gates on Thursday to release the flood waters. Presently, the flood water is being released from a total of 14 sluice gates.

On Wednesday, the Hirakud dam released this season’s floodwater into Mahanadi river through two sluice gates.  The people in the low lying areas have been warned not to venture into the river bed.

On the other hand, all achools and Anganwadi centers in Bolangir have been declared closed on Thursday in view of heavy rainfall in the district. In view of ongoing heavy rainfall since the past eight hours continuously, possible potential flooding and orange warning issued by the SRC for Bolangir district.

It is further worth mentioning that an alert Orange warning has been issued for moderate rain and thundershower with lightning and one or two intense spell of rain likely to affect some districts including Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Balangir, Rayagada, Bargarh, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Keonjhar and Dhenkanal for next three hours.

Water logging in low lying area, occasionally poor visibility and traffic disruption in urban area likely. Avoid movement in affected area and do arrangement for drainage of excess water, warned the weather department on Thursday.
