This was confirmed by Dr. AK Mohapatra,Chief of the Neurosciences Centre in AIIMS, to our New Delhi correspondent.

The hospital, in a press statement released on Tuesday, said the kids were doing fine after the 20-hour long surgery. The first of the two-phase surgery has been done and depending upon the outcome of the first phase, the doctors would decide on the second, it said.

There was no major blood loss or intra-operative problems and only a significant portion of their brain has been separated.

The duo suffer from Craniopagus, a rare medical condition wherein twins are joined from the cranium and have a high risk during surgical separation.

Prof. Deepak Gupta, Pediatric Neurosurgeon at AIIMS, said that the kids will require one or two more operations within three months time for the final separation.

Both were admitted in AIIMS on July 14. A team of 40 doctors managed the operation at different phases. A doctor from Japan, K Taki Jawa is also helping the Indian team.
