UGC to introduce one-year long master’s degrees for college students

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has suggested a one-year-long postgraduate programme or master’s degree for students.

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a draft curriculum and credit framework for PG programmes. As per the new guidelines by UGC, college going students can now pursue a one-year-long postgraduate programme or master’s degree.

As per the draft regulations, students who have completed either a 4-year undergraduate programme with honours, there could be a one-year master’s programme, or there may be an integrated 5-year bachelor’s/ master’s programme.  They will be eligible for admission in ME, M Tech in allied areas.

UGC approved the Draft Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate programmes in its meeting on November 3. The document will be made public later by the commission this week for feedback.

Moreover, the commission has also suggested that their should be flexibility for students to move from one discipline of study to another. Students who qualify UG with a double major should be able to opt for any of the two subjects they have majored in. Meanwhile, the students who qualify UG with a major and minor (s) will be given the flexibility to opt for either a major or minor(s) subject in master’s programme.

UGC chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar said that this type of provision have been introduced into the Indian education system for the first time. Once the draft curriculum framework is released, feedback will considered and then, the final framework will be approved by the UGC. After it gets approved, the One year MA programmes will then be implemented.
