This University grants menstrual leave for students

Chandigarh: The Panjab University has approved menstrual leave for the female students for the academic session 2024-25.

The vice chancellor of Punjab University has approved the proposal and it becomes the first University in the state to offer menstrual leave for the students.

A circular has been issued by the dean of the university with terms and conditions.

According to the circular, the students can take off per calendar month of teaching where teaching has taken place for at least 15 days. The students will be allowed to take a maximum of four days of leave per semester, with the leave day limited to teaching days.

The leave will not be accepted during any kind of examinations, whether its internal or external, mid semester or end semester and during practical examinations.

The students will have to fill out a form at the department office. The leave will need to be approved by the chairperson/Director of the concerned department.

“The number of lectures actually delivered on that particular day be added to the total lectures attended by the student compiled at the end of each month,” the circular mentioned.

In one month, a student can apply for only one day of leave and it cannot be split over two or more days.

In January 2023, Kerala’s Cochin University of Science and Technology was the first University in the country to provide menstrual leave to female students.
