Chennai: A stray dog has spread panic among the Royapuram residents of Chennai on Tuesday evening after it bit around 29 people in less than an hour. In a desperate retaliation, locals pelted the dog with stones, eventually killing it suspecting suspected the dog might have been rabid.

The victims, including several older people and five children, received treatment at Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital in Chennai after sustaining severe injuries due to the dog bites.

Authorities confirmed that even those with severe injuries were stable.

Greater Chennai Corporation officials said the dog was sent to the Madras Veterinary College for post-mortem for rabies testing.
